New Delhi, May 12, 2026: The Supreme Court of India has instructed the
Rajasthan government to formulate a comprehensive policy to recognize
and promote the Rajasthani language as a medium of instruction in
schools across the state. The decision underscores the importance of
mother-tongue-based education, aligning closely with the principles of
the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

A Bench comprising
Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta noted a constitutional
“vacuum” regarding the recognition of the language at the primary school
level and mandated structured steps to integrate Rajasthani into the
state’s broader educational curriculum.

The apex court has directed the state to introduce Rajasthani as a
formal subject in both government and private schools in a phased
manner. The integration is ordered to commence at the foundational and
preparatory stages of schooling before progressively expanding to higher
academic levels.
